Bright and sunny weather to light up most of UK today – but one area will see rain

Bright and sunny conditions will take hold today, weather forecasters have predicted, bathing all but one part of the country in a pleasant spring glow.

After a stunning start to April, which saw Brits enjoy some of the warmest days of the year so far – including one day with sweltering 20C highs last week – conditions have recently taken a turn for the worse. The Met Office on Tuesday set down a yellow alert for rain, with people living in parts of England and most of Wales drenched in heavy showers that deposited inches of water in short three-hour windows. With that warning having expired at midday today, it appears conditions are now set to improve – but not for everyone.

Today’s BBC Weather forecast has predicted Thursday would be a “drier day for much of the UK”, with the weather being dominated by “sunny spells and a few showers, mainly in the afternoon.”

The forecast adds that most of the predicted rain will hit England and Wales, while Scotland must bear the brunt of any rainfall appearing on weather radars. Meteorologists predict northern Scotland in particular will be “cloudy with patchy rain”, but will eventually turn “mostly dry by evening”.

Thursday’s forecast looks unlikely to stick beyond the day, unfortunately for those hoping the weather might celebrate the long weekend with them. The BBC’s forecast suggests the weather will remain “changeable” into Easter weekend, with rain parading across the west while temperatures remain “near average”.

The forecast characterises the weather as: “Remaining changeable as we move into the Easter weekend. Further spells of rain likely, especially across western areas, although some sunnier intervals also expected. Temperatures likely to remain near average.”

Beyond Easter weekend and into the final days of April, forecasters expect the less than sterling conditions will stay put, with showers broadening their tracks to cover the south especially. The Met Office long-range forecast – which covers April 21 to 30 – states high pressure will power a “showery theme” across the country.

The forecast predicts: “Many areas look to be rather showery at the start of this period, with the heaviest and most frequent showers more likely in the south. With time, this showery theme should become more confined to southern areas as pressure builds from the north, and by the final weekend of April high pressure may dominate most of the UK.

“This means a gradual increase in the extent of dry and for some, sunny conditions, though other areas may be rather cloudy at times. Where skies are clear overnight, some late season frost remains possible. It is possible that by the end of April, warmer conditions may develop, either through increased amounts of sunshine day on day or through a southerly airflow becoming established.”
